Action Research Design Outline

Joseline Sanchez

I. What is the topic of your action research?

My action research will focus on the impact of blended learning on student achievement in a 3rd grade classroom. Specifically, I aim to investigate how integrating both online and traditional instructional methods affects students' engagement, understanding of the material, and overall academic performance.

II. What is the purpose of your study?

The purpose of my study is to investigate the impact of blended learning on student achievement in a 3rd grade bilingual classroom. In a bilingual setting, student needs can vary significantly due to differing language proficiencies and learning styles. By integrating online and traditional instructional methods, blended learning has the potential to provide personalized support and resources that address these diverse needs more effectively than a traditional classroom setting. I aim to understand how this approach can enhance writing skills, increase student engagement, and improve overall academic performance. Ultimately, the study seeks to inform my teaching practices and contribute valuable insights to the field of bilingual education, helping to ensure that all students achieve their full potential.

III. What is your research question?

How does blended learning impact writing achievement in a 3rd grade bilingual classroom?

With this research question, I aim to explore how blended learning influences student achievement, specifically in the context of a 3rd grade bilingual classroom. By examining the effects of integrating both online and traditional instructional methods, I hope to uncover insights into how this approach can enhance student engagement, improve writing skills, and support diverse learners. Ultimately, my goal is to understand the relationship between blended learning and academic success.

IV. What is your research design (Qualitative, Quantitative, or Mixed Methods)

My research design will utilize a mixed methods approach. This allows me to gather both quantitative and qualitative data to provide a comprehensive understanding of the impact of blended learning on student achievement in my 3rd grade bilingual classroom. I will collect quantitative data through assessments and standardized tests to measure writing achievement and overall academic performance. This will help identify trends and correlations in student outcomes related to blended learning. In addition, I will gather qualitative data through observations, student interviews, and teacher reflections. This will provide insights into students' experiences, engagement levels, and perceptions of the blended learning environment.

a. Why did you choose this design

I chose this design because it enables me to identify not only measurable outcomes but also the experiences and perceptions of my students, which I believe are crucial in a bilingual context where needs can vary. The combination of both data types will help me capture a more holistic view of the effectiveness of blended learning, ultimately informing my instructional strategies and providing valuable insights for other educators in similar settings.

V. What data will you collect?

Quantitative data: Test scores (district provided unit/mid-unit assessments), online resource progress trackers (time spent and accuracy), completion of modules/units on online programs. All these resources can be used as evidenced of student achievement.

Qualitative data: Teacher observation notes, surveys/questionnaires, and student interviews. This will give us a better understanding of personal experiences with blended learning.

VI. What types of measurement will you use?

Test scores: Standardized tests, quizzes, and formative assessments can all be used as a measuring tool to evaluate the effectiveness of blended learning on learning outcomes.

Teacher observations: This can be utilized as an evaluation tool to assess student engagement and behavior during blended learning activities. They also provide insights into instructional effectiveness and individual student needs, helping teachers refine their strategies for improved outcomes.

Surveys/Questionnaires: This can be used as a tool to gather student feedback on their experiences with blended learning, including their engagement, satisfaction, and perceived effectiveness of the instructional methods. They can also collect data on student confidence in writing and other skills, providing valuable insights that inform instructional adjustments and enhance teaching strategies.

VII. What is the focus of your lit review?

The focus of my literature review will be on the rotational model of blended learning, particularly its implementation in elementary education. I will explore how this model affects student engagement, learning outcomes, and the overall classroom environment. Additionally, I will examine existing studies on best practices for effective integration of this model in 3rd grade classrooms, as well as any challenges teachers face in its application.
